Passengers, crew injured after turbulence on flight to Ireland

26 May 2024

Six passengers and six cabin crew were injured during turbulence on a flight from Qatar to Ireland today.

In a statement, daa (the authority that looks after Dublin Airport) said: "Qatar Airways flight QR107 from Doha landed safely as scheduled at Dublin Airport shortly before 13.00."

Six passengers and six cabin crew on board reported injuries after the aircraft "experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey".

The daa said the plane was met by emergency services, including Airport Police and the Fire and Rescue Department upon landing and "all passengers were assessed for injury prior to disembarking the aircraft".

"Eight on board were subsequently taken to hospital. The return flight to Doha (flight QR018) is scheduled to operate as normal this afternoon, albeit with a delay. Flight operations at Dublin Airport were unaffected and continue as normal this afternoon," the daa said.

"The Dublin Airport team continues to provide full assistance on the ground to passengers and airline staff," added daa.

Qatar Airways confirmed that flight QR017, a Boeing B787-9 from Doha to Dublin, landed safely at lunchtime today.

In a statement, the airline said that "a small number of passengers and crew sustained minor injuries in flight and are now receiving medical attention".

"The matter is now subject to an internal investigation," added the airline.

The National Ambulance said it is taking part in the operation at Dublin Airport.

Is a statement, the Health Service Executive said "in line with protocols, the National Ambulance Service (NAS) received a pre-alert to attend Dublin Airport".

"The NAS mobilised appropriate resources to attend and meet the flight. NAS is currently on site facilitating and supporting the disembarkment of passengers."

In relation to injuries sustained by anyone on board the flight, the HSE said it cannot comment on individual cases due to confidentiality.

This incident comes after a passenger died and dozens were injured after a Singapore Airlines flight hit severe turbulence last week.

That flight from London and bound for Singapore fell into an air pocket while cabin crew were serving breakfast before it encountered turbulence, prompting the pilots to request an emergency landing in Thailand.
