President Higgins taken to hospital after feeling unwell

29 Feb 2024

President Michael D Higgins was taken to hospital earlier today, after complaining of feeling unwell.

President Higgins, who is 82, was assessed by medics at Áras an Uachtaráin and found not to have any immediate concerns.

However, it's believed he was taken to hospital for further tests just as a precaution.

An update on the President's condition is expected to be issued by Áras an Uachtaráin later tonight.

It's understood the President left the Áras, in an ambulance, shortly after 5.30pm this evening.

Last night, President Higgins presented the 2024 Volta award to British film director Steve McQueen, at the Dublin International Film Festival.

Earlier that day, he received a courtesy call from Bui Thanh Son, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Vietnam.

He also met Peter Pellegrini, Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic and a parliamentary delegation to Áras an Uachtaráin.
