Two men arrested over fatal explosion in Creeslough

22 Mar 2024

Two men in their 50s have been arrested in connection with the garda investigation into the tragedy in which ten people died in Creeslough, Co Donegal.

The arrests were made this morning in the ongoing investigation into the explosion at the service station and apartment building on 7 October 2022.

The two men were arrested for alleged offences contrary to the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.

They are currently detained under the provisions of section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984 at separate garda stations in Donegal, and can be held for up to 24 hours.

Four men, three women and three young people, ranging in ages from five to 59, died in the blast.

Robert Garwe and his five-year-old daughter Shauna Flanagan Garwe, Catherine O'Donnell and her 13-year-old son James Monaghan, Jessica Gallagher, Martin McGill, James O'Flaherty, Martina Martin, Hugh Kelly and 14-year-old Leona Harper were all killed in the explosion.

It comes as details of a renewal plan for the village were revealed at a public meeting last night.

The plans were the result of numerous consultation sessions with local people and the bereaved families led by Donegal County Council, the Creeslough Community Association, and Arup Consultants, who acted pro bono.

The plan proposes a number of ways to enhance the local area, deal with dereliction and accessibility, as well as highlighting some climate actions.

However, the main project identified through the consultation process is a new community centre with sporting and many other facilities.
